Female Victim Knifed in Birmingham City Bus Shelter Attack Dies
The female victim who was stabbed in the neck in an unprovoked attack at a bus stop within Birmingham has died, authorities verified.
The deceased woman, who was 34, was targeted in Smallbrook Queensway, just outside the Bullring shopping centre, shortly before 21:00 GMT on Friday, according to police statements.
Djeison Rafael, twenty-one, appeared before Birmingham Magistrates Court Monday morning, facing charges for the attack.
He was previously accused of attempted murder however after the victim's passing the charge has been updated to murder.
Police Response
The force said officers would be around the city centre through Monday to offer reassurance, and investigators were supporting the woman's family.
Investigators are requesting for witnesses who may have seen the accused, identified as British citizen of Black ethnicity, reportedly dressed in grey athletic wear, black hat, trainers with a backpack.
Attack Site Details
The stabbing happened outside the Bullring shopping centre, across from the main entrance of New Street railway station.
Law enforcement confirmed they classified it as "unprovoked attack" with investigators stating efforts continue to determine why it happened.
Witness Accounts
An area worker, employed in the vicinity, described the emergency response after completing her shift around 10 PM on Friday.
She described the scene as "quite chaotic", and said co-workers reported hearing a commotion at about 21:00.
"A lot of my colleagues use transit services, take the tram... our safety is at risk essentially, here in the city centre."
Another individual, twenty-five, from Stoke-on-Trent, said he came to Birmingham quite frequently visiting his partner resident there, and was concerned about what had happened.
"It causes concern about my partner," he said.
"She lacks transportation and works at major concert locations... considering something completely unprovoked [happened], understandably, it's terrible."
